In December 2006, Vitelli made his debut at Teatro alla Scala in Giuseppe Verdi’s Aida, produced and directed by Franco Zeffirelli and conducted by Maestro Riccardo Chailly. To follow, he frequently performed Verdi roles such as Otello (Jago) in Athens, La traviata (Germont), Il trovatore (Conte di Luna) and Aida (Amonasro) at the Verdi Festival in Parma, Macbeth (title role) at the Canadian Opera Company, Toronto, also Il trovatore at the Tokyo National Theater, and at the season premiere of the Barcelona Liceu (2009). Besides Verdi roles, Vitelli sang La Gioconda (Barnaba) at the Liceu of Barcelona, Cavalleria rusticana (Alfio) at the Teatro Carlo Felice, Genoa, conducted by Maestro Bruno Bartoletti, Cavalleria and Pagliacci (Tonio) at the Liceu and at the National Theater of Tokyo, The role of Gleby in Giordano’s opera, Siberia at the Festival of Valle d’Itria, Andrea Chenier (Gerard) also in Tokyo, Leoncavallo’s Bohème (Rodolfo) at the Theater An Der Wien. In addition to the Verdi repertoire and interpreting the villain roles in Italian verismo, Vitelli also interpreted bel canto roles such as the already mentioned Enrico Ashton in Lucia di Lammermoor by Donizetti and also Bellini: Riccardo Forth in I puritani in Liege, Severo in Poliuto by Donizetti at Opéra de Marseille, Belcore in Elisir d’Amore at the Washington Opera and the role of Figaro in Rossini’s Barbiere di Siviglia in Washington and Florence. Recently, Vitelli sang Rigoletto at Oper Leipzig, Attila (Ezio) at the Opéra de Marseille, Lucia at Teatro San Carlo in Naples, Aida at the Bregenz Festival, Aida and Traviata at the Teatro Lirico of Cagliari, Simon Boccanegra at the Opera of Beijing under the direction of Maestro Myung Whun Chung, Ernani, La traviata, Macbeth and La Bohème at the New Israeli Opera, Giovanna d’Arco (Giacomo) at the Verdi Festival in Parma.
Future engagements include Simon Boccanegra at the Opera de Dijon, Carmen (Escamillo) at the Hong Kong Opera, Giovanna d’Arco at the Klang Festival in Dortmund, Rigoletto at the Teatro Petruzzelli in Bari, Simon Boccanegra at the New Israeli Opera in Tel Aviv.
